7. Does the Pet Porte cat flap work on batteries?
No, the cat flap comes with a small plug-in power adaptor, similar to the ones used on telephones. This enables the Pet Porte unit to scan constantly for your pet. The amount of electricity used however is very small, i.e. less than 3 watts, and you do not need to worry about the batteries going flat thus preventing access for your cat.
The adaptor reduces the voltage from 240V to 12V so, even if your pet damages the cable for the electricity supply, the low voltage will not harm your animal.
8. What if my nearest power socket is too far away?
The Pet Porte cat flap comes with a 2.5-metre power lead which is often sufficient to reach the nearest power socket. If, however, your power socket is further away, then we do sell 5-metre extension leads which are compatible with the cat flap – see the Products page for more information.
9. What happens if there is a power cut?
In the event of a power cut, which is thankfully rare these days, the cat flap will lock so that animals cannot enter. This will prevent intruding animals from entering your house during the power failure. However, any animal will still be able to go out. Once the power has been restored, the cat flap will continue to operate normally.
10. If there is a power cut, do I have to re-program in all my pets again?
No, once your pets have been programmed in, you will not need to repeat the procedure, even in the event of a power failure.
11. If my pet chews the power cable from the adaptor will it hurt it?
No, the adaptor reduces the voltage from 240V to 12V so, even if your pet damages the cable for the electricity supply, the low voltage will not harm your animal.
12. Can the implanting of a microchip harm my pet?
Microchipping has no known harmful effects in dogs. In cats there is a theoretical risk associated with any injection. Statistics show that 1 in 10,000 cats that have an injection is at risk of developing an injection-site tumour. However, this is very rare and is certainly no reason to stop vaccinating or microchipping your cat because, generally, the risks are outweighed by the protection that is provided.
13. Can the Pet Porte be fitted into glass doors and double-glazed units?
It is possible to fit the Pet Porte cat flap into glass doors but it is not an easy or inexpensive task. The installation would need to be done by a qualified tradesman who has the equipment to cut holes in glass. Some double-glazing manufacturers do not recommend fitting any cat flap to a double-glazed panel as it weakens the glass which is then liable to break. Also, it is often a procedure that has to be done at manufacture. Please consult your local glazier for more information.
14. Can the cat flap be fitted into solid and cavity walls?
Yes, it is possible to fit the Pet Porte cat flap into walls where suitable holes can be formed. The hole between the two halves of the Pet Porte should be fitted with a suitable liner. Please note that the only difference between the door model and the wall model is the length of wire that runs between the outside porch and the indoor electronics; the door versions have about 8cms of wire, whereas the wall-mounted models have about 15 inches of wire.
